Organic vs. Semi-Metallic vs. Ceramic Brake Pads

Organic Brake Pads - also known as non-asbestos organic brake pads. Organic brake pads are composed of various fiber mixed with a binding resin. Common materials include fiber, rubber, carbon, Kevlar and small amounts of metal (10-30%). These pads are soft and easy on rotors; providing low dust friction without noise. Organic brake pads will wear faster than semi-metallic brake pads.

Semi-Metallic Brake Pads ? contain anywhere from 30-65% metal by weight combined with friction modifiers. Semi-Metallic pads are longer lasting and more durable while providing more efficient brake cooling. Performance is dramatically increased over organic pads due to their much higher thermal threshold. Noisier than organic or ceramic pads and will create more brake dust.

Ceramic Brake Pads ? composed of dense ceramic material. Developed as an alternative brake pad to reduce noise and dust. Ceramic pads are easy on rotors and yet have a longer lifespan that both organic or semi-metallic pads. Consistent performance across a wide range of temperatures. May not have as much initial bite and not designed for heavy-duty or racing brake applications.
